We’re off to see the Wizards, The Wonderful Wizards of Raw… food that is! It’s that time again for the Wonderful Wizards of Raw: A Raw Foods Extravaganza!
It’s what we’ve all been waiting for! June 6th from 11- 8 pm and June 7th from 11- 7pm brings us together again to explore, affirm and celebrate the Raw food Movement. Yes, it really is a movement, a live-ity/ lifestyle, a commitment to life!
What is The Wonderful Wizards of Raw all about this year? Well in a “nut shell” or in our case a “spicy kale wrap”, LOL, Tassili’s Raw Reality is showcasing raw food chefs and aspiring chefs by tastings, investing and educating the public with the wizardry of these chefs.
There will be special presentations by Chef Yolanda, Sistah Dee, Dr. Hernandez, and me, Chef Tassili. We will be honoring our local farmers with an open panel discussion. There will be ‘innertainment’; documentaries, an ancestral tree planting ceremony, a community planting dance and a khemetic yoga session. You don’t want to miss this feast for the body, mind, soul, and spirit. For more details, read on!
On Saturday, June 6th, beginning at 11am, we will open our gathering with a sacred libation poured by one of our “Keepers of the Culture” , Nana Jumoke Ifetayo. There will be a warm welcome by me, Tassili Maat. Next, we’ll move into a guided musical meditation of light and love to center and harmonize us. It will be lead by Bilal and Taj, formally of the “Suns of Light”, now known as “Purple Crown”.
This year we are honoring our local farmers. They are truly the First Wizards of Raw, as they grow what they rest of us prepare and consume. Our local farmers are so Wonderful that we had to invite several of then to join us in a panel discussion about urban farming. So get your ‘ always wanted to know” questions ready!
Our powerful Wonderful Wizards of Raw panel will be moderated by the father of the urban farming movement in Atlanta, Baba Rashid Nuri, of Truly Living Well Urban Farms. Our panelist are, Eugene Cooke, of Grow Where You Are, an organization located at the Good Shepherd Church farm, Ras Kofi of Truly Living Well, Ebrima Ba of Seedz of Change Farm in Stone Mountain, Queen Mother Haylene, The Green Garden Queen of West End Community Urban Garden and Nursery, Mr. Anderson, of I Grow You Grow, Sista Aja Ray of Oakland City Community Garden, and Corrine Coe, of Tera Nova Compost Company.
Please note, there are many more local farmers and growers in the Metro Atlanta Area. Some couldn’t be here for various reasons though we wanted to give a few of them a shout out anyway, because they are so vital to our collective sustainability. So shouts out to Habesha, Patchwork city farm, Mother Clydes Community Garden, and Eat to Live Farms.
We have an esteemed line up of Wonderful Wizards of Raw presenters. These chefs have expanded their wizardry to education, politics, healing, business and beauty. They have dedicated years to their craft and will lovingly and generously share their wisdom, knowledge and expertise with us.
Our 1st Wonderful Wizards of Raw presenter is Skin Care Chef, Yolanda Owens of IWI Fresh, a farm to skin spa. IWI Fresh is located in Castleberry Hill. A former engineer, Chef Yolanda left corporate to pursue her calling as a healer. Chef Yolanda’s culinary alchemy consists of using all edibles for the basis of her skin care products that she makes herself. Chef Yolanda will show us some of her wonderful wizardry with a demo presentation.
Our 2nd Wonderful Wizards of Raw presenter is Sistah Dee owner of Incient Roots Daughter. Sistah Dee specializes is using healing herbs as the essence of her culinary alchemy. Sistah Dee grows many of her own herbs and is an activist in support of medical marijuana. Sistah Dee will put us up on the latest info regarding the new laws passed legalizing medical marijuana. Sistah Dee will also do a demo without marijuana… Its not that legal yet !!! LOL !!!
Dr. Hernandez is our 3rd Wonderful Wizards of Raw presenter. Dr. Hernandez is a natural path, herbalist, energy worker, educator, and Chi Kung master and chef. Dr. Hernandez currently has a prepared meal service called “Guess What the Doctor Ordered”. Dr. Hernandez founded Holistic University in 2012, and will share is alchemical wizardry with us from a scientific perspective. Dr. Hernandez will enlighten us with the metabolic function of raw and cooked foods in the body. So for you fellow alchemist out there, you can “ask Dr. Hernandez”.
Out final Wonderful of Wizards of Raw presenter for the day is yours truly, Chef Tassili Maat. I am owner of Tassili’s Raw Reality Café, located in the heart of the historic West End. Being vegan for 28 years, and a raw foodist for 7 ½ , I will share my expertise, knowledge, wisdom and insight into the Maatical Balance of a Raw Food live-it in an urban environment. I will demo one of our “nu sol food” favorites. You don’t want to miss this. It’ll be delicious.
Interwoven throughout the Wonderful Wizards of Raw our local and nationally known featured chefs will be introducing themselves and their culinary alchemy. There will be more conscious innertainment intertwined through out the day. Our line up includes, ZRO as our Master of Ceremonies, Purple Crown, Q of Cypha House, ElleStar, Terangi, Vivaldi 7, Trio Kollective, and closing out with Shanti Om. And that’s Just Saturday.
Sunday June 7th, 2015, we begin at 11 am with Ebrima Ba’s documentary: “Food, Clothing, Shelter”. This is a documentary that was created locally to address a growing concern globally. Ebrima Ba is a street journalist, who he himself has been homeless. Ebrima highlights not only the problem, but gives a viable solution through community farming. Ebrima is also the founder of Rootz of Change Farms. There will be a Q&A to follow.
Our 2nd documentary begins at 1pm. “The Coconut Revolution”. This international film takes us on a journey to a South Pacific island off the coast of the Solomon Islands. It explores the struggle waged by the people as they defeat imperialism. They overcome and gain their independence by reclaiming their traditional ways and resources using the coconut. Eugene Cook of Grow Where You Are, located at The Good Shepherd Church Farm, will be leading the Q&A afterwards.
Between 2:30 – 3:30 we will break for food at Tassili’s Raw Reality and experience opening demo by the Raw Food Chef Jeff, presented by the Black Vegetarian Society of GA.
Around 4pm, we’ll head out to a designated spot in the community for our Ancestral Tree Planting Ceremony. Fruit tree seeds a will be provided by Eugene Cook. The ceremonial offering is for the honoring of our ancestors who honored the land. You are invited to wear white and bring fruit, veggies, and flowers for a community alter. Drums and other instruments are welcomed. There will be a sacred libation to begin the ceremony poured by Nana Jumoke Ifetayo. A prayer offering of gratitude will be lead by me, Sem Seti Ra’at Tassili Mata Atama Ma’at. Arata Ma’at will follow with an offering of song to nature.
A community planting dance follows lead by Sista Christian of African Djeli Dance Company and the whole community is invited to participate! Yes, get your line dance on traditionally! Drummers will accompany us, and community drummers, you can join in.
This rich experience will culminate at 6pm with a community Khemetic Yoga Class a taught by Basu Asr Aunkh Aakhu, led by Richard Zulu Shabazz. Basu Aunkh is a certified instructor of Thef Neter Khemetic Yoga and he offers a certification course at The I AM Ascension Temple.
